Labor Discount Groups

Overview

Companies that operate as labor houses need a better way to work with labor pricing. Companies that do work for big box stores. Companies that require special pricing for industry groups such as designers, builders, and multifamily. Printing price lists of labor for these groups.

We moved the labor discount from one combined tab to its own tab. You will now see two tabs in Group Discounts: Material and Labor. These 2 tabs share the same value list of group names.

Post Update: The labor discount group column will move to the new Labor tab in Group discounts. It will maintain the legacy data information.

Levels of labor discounts

There are 3 levels of labor discounts available. Level 1 is the labor discount percentage established directly at the discount group name. Level 2 is the labor discounts established for each labor type name. Level 3 is the labor discount established for each labor description item. The levels of labor discounts begin at a broad coverage of discounts working down into a greater level of granularity.

In order to setup any labor discount, there must be a discount group name created in the Group Discount Labor section.

Navigate to Admin.

Open the Group Discounts area.

There are now two tabs of discount groups.

1. Material discount settings
2. Labor discount settings

After the v24b1 update, the column that used to be LABOR will now be represented in its own tab labeled Labor. The labor discounts that were established in the legacy layout have now moved to the labor tab.

Note: The group name list is shared by both tabs at all times.

This means that if you create a new group name on the Material tab, it will automatically show up on the Labor tab and vice versa. If you delete a group name on one of the tabs, both tabs will remove the deleted group name. This is so that you can create group discount names that use both the material and labor discount settings within the same group name.

Labor Group Discount Definitions

The columns on the labor group discount screen are mapped here.

A. The tab header indicates the level number of the discounts established on this screen in the LABOR DISCOUNT column.
B. Group field is for creating a name for the group discount. Remember this name will also live on the material tab.
C. Labor Discount field is for establishing a general labor discount percentage. This discount percentage applies to all labor lines on a job.
D. Omit Tax checkbox is to omit that labor group from calculating tax at the job. Keep in mind that the tax type also controls what is taxed so please consult your accountant before using this option.
E. Copy button is used to copy the parameters of one labor discount group name in preparation for pasting those parameters and settings into another labor discount group name. Note: this is a copy button for copying level 2 and level 3 only. Level 1 is easily entered line by line.
F. Paste button is used to paste the copied parameters and settings of one labor discount group to another labor discount group.
G. Info button is used to establish level 2 labor discounts based on product structure and not a general discount percentage.
H. Del button is used to delete a discount group on both the labor and the material lists.

Level 1 Labor Discounts

Establishing a general labor discount for the discount group is performed at the main Group Discounts screen. Use the Labor Discount field (letter C above) to enter the percentage of discount down from retail/house price you wish to use for that group.

Only one level of discount is recommended for each discount group. It is not recommended to blend multiple levels of discount in the same discount group name.

This level 1 labor discount option is the same option that existed in the system prior to the v24b1 update.

Level one labor discounts will be shown at the bottom of the quote/job in the discount field.

Level 2 Labor Discount

The level 2 labor discount is established from the main group discount screen by clicking the INFO button on the line with the group name needed for a more detailed discount setup (letter G above).

The level 2 labor discount screen is labeled with the level of discount that is being established. Establish either the GPM% pricing or a mark-up / mark-down percentage discount.

Note: Levels 2 & 3 discounts adjust the unit sell price in each line and will not be shown at the bottom of the quote/job totals.

A. The screen header indicates the group discount name that is actively being modified.
B. The column header indicates that level 2 labor discounts are being established.
C. The Labor Type list comes from the labor catalog. This is the labor type categories setup in the labor catalog.
D. GPM% is a gross margin percentage that indicates the labor type should mark all those labor descriptions within that labor type at the established GPM%. This supersedes the GPM established at the labor catalog’s house GPM% pricing.
E. Mark UP / Mark Down is the percentage over or under retail/house labor pricing that needs to be calculated for those specific labor type categories.
a. Positive entry = Mark up
b. Negative entry = Markdown
F. Arrow button is an auto-fill button for the Mark Up / Mark Down entry. Use this when establishing the same percentage for all labor types once the first percentage has been entered.
G. Omit Tax checkbox is to force the system to not calculate tax on that labor type, affecting all of the labor descriptions within that labor type category.

Level 3 Labor Discounts

Level 3 labor discounts are established directly at the labor catalog. The levels of discount get gradually more granular the higher in level you create.

The labor discount established at the labor catalog level, work similarly to the discounts established at the product catalog level for materials.

Navigate to the Labor Catalog from the main navigator screen and open a labor type category.

Inside the labor type category setup screen, there are tools to establish discounts to each labor description.

1. Open the SETUP tab to access the group discount grid.
2. Click the GROUP button next to any labor description item to populate the group discount list in the bottom half of the screen.
3. The labor item will show that specific labor description item in each group discount name.
4. Use the MODIFY button to change the discount pricing for that particular group name on that specific labor description item.

The custom discount change screen offers three ways to set labor pricing and discounts. Be sure to click the DONE button next to the option used for modification. This will return you to the setup screen once you answer the confirm dialog box.

A. Use the Mark Up / Down option to set a percentage of mark up or mark down (not GPM) from the regular house price.
B. Use the New Sell Price option to set a new sell price per unit.
C. Use the GPM% to set a new gross profit margin percentage over cost.
D. Use the Cancel button to cancel all entries and return to the previous screen. Use the Default button to set all pricing back to the default pricing.

Note: Levels 2 & 3 discounts adjust the unit sell price in each line and will not be shown at the bottom of the quote/job totals.

Using Labor Discounts in Projects

When you use the labor discounts in project proposals, you will not see the discount total at the bottom grand total area as a “discount” total. Since the labor discounts are set directly at the labor level, the discounted price shows in the line itemization pricing so the discount is taken in the line and not calculated after the contract total.
