Pacific Solutions Hosting: Disconnection from Hosted Server Without Prompt or Error Message

Overview

Users who are disconnected from an RDP session within 30 seconds, without receiving an error message, may be experiencing a known issue caused by the Lexmark Universal Print Driver/Fax Driver. Updating/removing the Lexmark driver typically resolves the problem.

Issue:

User's RDP session is disconnected within 30 of connecting to the hosted server. The user does not receive an error message.

Symptoms:

  1. User can launch the Remote Desktop session normally.
  2. Session appears to connect successfully.
  3. No error message or disconnect prompt is displayed.
  4. User is abruptly disconnected from the RDP session after approximately 30 seconds.
  5. Issue may occur consistently each time the user attempts to connect.

Cause:

The issue is caused by a known compatibility problem involving a Lexmark printer/fax driver, specifically, the file LMFX1N4Z.DLL.The file is associated with the Lexmark Universal Print Driver / Fax Driver and can cause the Remote Desktop client (mstsc.exe) to crash on Windows 11 systems. When printer redirection occurs during the RDP connection process, the Lexmark driver triggers an access violation, causing the Remote Desktop session to terminate shortly after it starts.

Resolution:

Option 1: Update or Remove the Lexmark Driver
  1. Open Devices and Printers.
  2. Identify any Lexmark printer or fax devices installed on the workstation.
  3. Update to the latest Lexmark driver available from Lexmark.
  4. If the issue persists, uninstall the Lexmark Universal Print Driver/Fax Driver.
  5. Reboot your computer.
  6. Test the RDP connection again.
Option 2: Temporarily Remove the Lexmark Fax Component
If the Lexmark printer must remain installed, removing only the Lexmark Fax component may resolve the issue while preserving printing functionality.
